WASHINGTON — Mike Davis, Founder and President of the Internet Accountability Project, today releases the following statement regarding Twitter’s new ban on “private media.”
“It’s clear that Twitter is already moving in a more pro-censorship direction under the leadership of its new CEO. This new policy is both vague and overly broad, with penalties up to permanent suspension, which will chill free speech and free press. It’s difficult to see how this new standard wouldn’t apply to many of the Hunter Biden documents found on his laptop or video of looters in Democrat-run cities. This seems designed to strengthen Twitter’s power to silence conservative activists, journalists and whistleblowers and censor information that is of public interest but politically damaging to Democrats.
“Individual privacy is important, but it shouldn’t be used to muzzle free speech and open political debate. This new policy demonstrates just how disconnected from American values the Big Tech oligarchs at Twitter and other social media platforms are. It is nothing more than a further step by the Left and Big Tech to establish themselves as gatekeepers of information in our republic. They must be reined in and broken up before they can do any more damage to our political system.”
IAP is a nonprofit conservative advocacy group that holds Big Tech accountable for engaging in egregious business practices like snooping, spying, political bias against conservatives, employee abuses and anticompetitive conduct. Davis previously served as Chief Counsel for Nominations to Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) on the United States Senate Committee on the Judiciary and led the Senate confirmation of Justice Brett Kavanaugh and a record number of circuit court judges.
